Why can people not understand that I am reading straight from the Bible?
It's a faulty doctrine of the Denomination called "Church of Christ". Baptism does not change your salvific status. It does not make you "more saved", nor does not being baptized make you "less saved".
Galatians 3
Let me ask you only this: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law or by hearing with faith?
3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by
[a] the flesh?
4 Did you suffer
[b] so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain?
5 Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith—
6 just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”?
A works salvation will get you nowhere, because you cannot be saved by the things you do.
Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—
9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
Baptism is commanded, but it does not save you.
