So Abraham lied when he said it is not possible? He's been with Jesus some 1000 years (at the time of the story), you'd think he'd know better than us by then.
Oh, crossnote.....:giggle: Look at the parable that Jesus Christ was telling the Pharisee IN CONTEXT...:geek:

Luke 16:19-31 King James Version (KJV)
19 There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day:
20 And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
21 And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

The Pharisees boasted in Abraham as their father and that they had all the writings of Moses and the Prophets - just puffed up with pride and human reasoning and absolutely just as lost as the Gentiles. Right there in front of them stood the Human Fulfillment of the Law of Moses and the writings of the Prophets proclaiming the Messiah.

Those Pharisees would not be going to Abraham's bosom upon death but, would be going to Hades (Hell). Jesus Christ was warning them.

Upon death, the ONLY ONE able to cross the Great Chasm is Jesus Christ alone because He alone has the keys to Death and Hades (Hell).

A rose by any other name is still a rose. Call it what you want. Is it your teaching or did someone share it with you?
I greatly enjoy snuggling with the Holy Spirit with God's Word....just reading slowly and asking tons of questions and pondering all His answers.....The Holy Spirit is the BEST TEACHER OF GOD'S WORD!(y)

In humility, just totally relying on the Holy Spirit to teach me...He and I both know I won't learn or know anything without Him - The Spirit of Truth. We have a great time!(y)

A person could say the same sort of thing for Universalism, but we shouldn't base teachings of Scripture as true because they make us 'feel' good.
Oh goodness crossnote......more labels.....now it's "universalism".... I know nothing about "universalism" nor do I care to. :giggle:

His love is amazing but it ought be communicated accurately...
I agree!(y)

But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.
(Gal 1:8-9)
There is ONLY ONE WAY of Salvation....believing, receiving and loving the absolute Truth that Jesus Christ is the ONLY Savior. All lost souls need the Blood and Body of Jesus Christ which cleanses us from our sins and gives us the Righteousness of God IN CHRIST and we are sealed with the Holy Spirit.

Believing that Jesus Christ, the only Savior can even save lost souls from Hades (Hell) because He has the keys of Death and Hades (Hell) and no souls perish in Hades (Hell) is NOT contrary to the Gospel.

FYI he already did that LOL.

Jesus can do all things but go against His word or the will of the Father.
I believe it is possible that Jesus Christ is STILL preaching to the spirits that are in prison because it would be the Father's Will that He do so because Jesus Christ has been given the keys of Death and Hades (Hell).(y)

the application is not for those who are dead but to those who are alive, That Parable of Lazarus and the rich man speaks to a life who did not serve God

While on earth you had good things and Lazarus had bad, Now your turn.

The rich man could not warn those living, he could not speak to those on the other side a great divide was between them both.

a very sad picture of the reality of total separation from God that is what HELL is. No Hope, no help, no escape.

Jesus has placed the responsibility to preach the Gospel to me and you. HIS Calling to do so is to the living not the dead.

Jesus said Let the dead burial the Dead.

Yes, we get to preach to the living on Earth because we don't have the keys to Death and Hades (Hell), only Jesus Christ does.(y)

It would be very sad but, Jesus Christ has the keys to Death and Hades (Hell)! Yay God!!! There is hope, there is help and there is an escape but, ONLY through Jesus Christ, amen!(y)

Okay, dear precious brothers of mine - @CS1 and @crossnote and everyone that disagrees with me on this issue....

So what?! We all still love each other and love Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and King!

It's been a joy discussing if lost souls in Hades (Hell) still have a chance to be saved by Jesus Christ.

Much love and respect to all of you!(y)

I think this seems very plausible IF Jesus preaches to the dead. Since Jesus has the keys to Hades, He certainly is able to do so, and we already know He has preached the Gospel once in Hades.

Why the warning, when Jesus (supposedly) knows the Pharisees get a 2nd chance? Selah

Anywhoo, I think we have made clear our points, and our points don't intersect on this issue. I'm not going to pursue this any further.
Good day.

Why is the Lake of Fire even more tormenting when compared to Hell, rather than places of equal torment?
The "Lake of Fire" is the really bad kind of Hell. 'Hell' can have different meanings, depending on context and what word it was translated from in the original language. "Lake of Fire" always refers to the really bad place.

Ode 15
  1. Death has been destroyed before my face, and Sheol has been vanquished by my word.
  2. And eternal life has arisen in the Lord's land, and it has been declared to His faithful ones, and has been given without limit to all that trust in Him
Jewish poetry is known to exaggerate and this is Christian Jewish. With that said here Christ envisages the complete destruction of death (as found in Paul i think), also Sheol is so hammered it's long term future is uncertain. Christ was a BIG DEAL it's saying. I'm promoting the Odes here for any God wants to read them, http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/odes.html
some people don't like non-biblical texts but this one is special i think

What exactly was Jesus' message and to whom?

1 Peter 3:19-20 (KJV) By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

As far as we know He did not preach the Gospel to them, perhaps He proclaimed the fact that He had conquered death and Hades, despite their unbelief during the days of Noah , thus confirming them in their condemnation through His proclamation

Hi Oyster,

Gehenna is a word for Hell that means Lake of Fire.

Hades is a word for Hell that means prison where departed spirits are kept. Jesus Christ has the keys to Death and Hades (Hell).

Both are places of judgment but, only the Lake of Fire is FINAL Judgment where the body AND soul are destroyed according to Matthew 10:28. Gehenna is the word used in Matthew 10:28.

No souls perish in Hades....just extreme torment.

Thank you! Other interesting places I have heard of are "Abraham's Bosom" and "Paradise". How do these fit into the picture?

None of the Old Testament Prophets were agnostics LOL They f Knew God and had a relationship with HIM. They had dialogue with the Living God.

Interestingly, the imagery of Abraham's bosom has a parallel with John 13:24-25 when Peter lays on Jesus' chest.

"Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad." - John 8:56

Some OT individuals did know of Jesus, such as Abraham.

I believe that Jesus is still preaching to those spirits in prison too. Jesus always accomplishes the will and desire of the Father and will continue to do so.

So far, the question "Do agnostics go to hell?" has been separated into some different interpretations of:

1) What is an agnostic?
2) Which hell are we talking about? (Hades or Gehenna, aka: the place of the dead vs the Lake of Fire)
3) Does going to Hades mean that one certainly goes to the Lake of Fire?
4) When does the judgement happen? (At death or on judgement day? Or both?)
5) If someone goes to Hades, is that a God-given judgement or a spiritual condition of suffering?
6) Can a person in Hades be saved by Christ? Or is it too late?

These six questions seem to be points that aren't necessarily agreed upon by the speakers so far.
