You misunderstand crossnote. Its not because the Catholics pray to Mary, its because the Catholics have made Mary equal to God.

Catholics believe they have received Salvation when they were Baptized as babies in the Catholic Church. Therefore no Catholic feels the need to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior to receive Salvation.

God does forgive us of all our sins, but not accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior is one sin God cannot forgive.

This is why Catholics will never enter into Heaven.
I think you would find that impossible to prove.

did you learn this from Catholics or non Catholics?

All Catholics that I know have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. They affirm this during every service. I don't know any that have made Mary equal to God.

You have twisted what was said. Grace believers say that certain elements of the prayer have been fulfilled already because of the cross.

For example. "Your kingdom come. Your will be done". The kingdom of God came when Jesus was raised from the dead and now the kingdom is inside us believers. Jesus said the kingdom is near you and then He said - it will be "in" you talking of His finished work.

Grace777x70, you may look below at parts of an explanation to compare with what you have said.

"6. “Thy kingdom come.”[SUP]1975[/SUP] To whom do we speak? and will not God’s kingdom come, if we ask it not. For of that kingdom do we speak which will be after the end of the world. For God hath a kingdom always; neither is He ever without a kingdom, whom the whole creation serveth. But what kingdom then dost 276thou wish for? That of which it is written in the Gospel, “Come, ye blessed of My Father, receive the kingdom which is prepared for you from the beginning of the world.” [SUP]1976[/SUP] Lo here is the kingdom whereof we say, “Thy kingdom come.” We pray that it may come in us; we pray that we may be found in it. For come it certainly will; but what will it profit thee, if it shall find thee at the left hand? Therefore, here again it is for thine own self that thou wishest well; for thyself thou prayest. This it is that thou dost long for; this desire in thy prayer, that thou mayest so live, that thou mayest have a part in the kingdom of God, which is to be given to all saints. Therefore when thou dost say, “Thy kingdom come,” thou dost pray for thyself, that thou mayest live well. Let us have part in Thy kingdom: let that come even to us, which is to come to Thy saints and righteous ones."

Grace believers say that we can learn much from the prayer as it reveals the Father's heart to look after us.

The other aspect is that now our debts are forgiven us because of the cross. We forgive now because we have been forgiven. ( Eph. 4:32 Col.3:13 )

It's a response from our heart that has been forgiven. It is not a requirement for forgiveness as has been erroneously taught altho with good intentions.

"We have been baptized, and yet are we debtors. Not that anything then remained, which was not remitted to us in Baptism, but because in our lives we are contracting ever what needs daily forgiveness. They who are baptized, and forthwith depart out of this life, come up from the font[SUP]1991[/SUP] without any debt; without any debt they leave the world. But they who are baptized and are still kept in this life, contract defilements by reason of their mortal frailty, by which though the ship be not sunk, yet have they need of recourse to the pump. For otherwise by little and little will that enter in by which the whole ship will be sunk. And to offer this prayer, is to have recourse to the pump. But we ought not only to pray, but to do alms also, because when the pump is used to prevent the ship from sinking, both the voices and hands are at work. Now we are at work with our voices, when we say, “Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.” And we are at work with our hands when we do this, “Break thy bread to the hungry, and bring the houseless poor into thine house.[SUP]1992[/SUP] Shut up alms in the heart of a poor[SUP]1993[/SUP]man, and it shall intercede for thee unto the Lord.”[SUP]1994[/SUP]
The other thing to consider is that Jesus at the end of His ministry just before going to the cross said that "in that day" you shall ask in My name. The Lord's prayer does not have asking in Jesus's name because He had not gone to the cross yet.

John 16:23-24 (KJV)
[SUP]23 [/SUP] And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

[SUP]24 [/SUP]Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
[SUB][/SUB]
I understand that this goes against our religious beliefs we have had from our former teachings but in reality the prayer was to be a transition prayer from the Old to the New Covenants and in it we can glean many beautiful truths about the Father.

"The words therefore which our Lord Jesus Christ hath taught us in His prayer, are the rule and standard of our desires. Thou mayest not ask for anything but what is written there."

Someone made a post about "grace believers" understanding.... about the Lord's Prayer.
I thought that the bible was clear that the Lord's Prayer was an example of "how to pray" and not something to repeat over and over again?

Sorry just had to mention that I noticed the Title of your thread was "Meaningless Repetition" and then I read your name "joyyyyccceee" lol. Just funny maybe I am the only one.

I look at the Lord's prayer as a perfect blueprint or skeletal structure for all our prayers no matter how long or short.

...and yes I am catholic in the sense that all born again believers belong to His universal Church.
Roman Catholic? Nope, that is an oxymoron in the first place.

Hey PaulMack,

Sorry. That just isn't true. I've never met any Catholic who thinks Mary is equal to God. You are simply wrong.

Catholics believe they have received Salvation when they were Baptized as babies in the Catholic Church.

True. Catholics call this the "initial grace of salvation" which is 100% totally and completely unmerited by anyone....so, yeah...why withhold that from babies? Nobody can do anything to earn it anyways.

Paul calls this being "baptized into Jesus Christ" in Romans 6: "3Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?" (KJV)

BTW, here is a link to Chapter 28 of the Westminster Confession of Faith (notice what these Protestants say in part IV):

Westminster Confession of Faith

Therefore no Catholic feels the need to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior to receive Salvation.

"No Catholic"? Really? With all due respect to you, there is no way that you can possibly know that unless you yourself are omniscient.

Also, to "accept Jesus as their Lord and Saviour"....I keep missing that when I read the Bible. Could you please point me to the book, chapter, and verse that states that? Just curious.

God does forgive us of all our sins,

Agreed. Well, conditioned with the fact that we are sorry for our sins and repent. I don't think unrepentant sinners receive forgiveness, do they?

but not accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior is one sin God cannot forgive.

Could you tell me where the Bible says this again? I couldn't find it. Thanks.

This is why Catholics will never enter into Heaven.

Just so you know, I know lots of Catholics who have complete faith in Jesus Christ. What else would you say they should do to enter Heaven?

God bless.

I was reading the Bible the other day and I came across Matthew 6:7 (AMP) that says "and when you pray do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think they will be heard because of their many words." what does God mean by meaning less repetition?

I lost my dog 11 days ago and I've been repeating the same thing over and over again, that God would restore my dog and all her puppies back to me and thanking him for restoration. Is this meaningless repetition?

Hey joyyyycceee,

I am sorry that you lost your dog and puppies. I hope you find her and the pups if you haven't already.

I don't remember right now but I think it was AuntieAnt who said the emphasis in Matthew 6:7 isn't on "repetition" but on "meaningless". I think she is right because:

1. Jesus prayed and repeated Himself in Matthew 26:44 "And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words." (KJV)

2. Read Psalm 136. Can you say "...for His mercy endureth forever?" :) Talk about repetitive!! (Just not "meaningless").

3. In Revelation 4:8 it says: "And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come." (KJV)

Day and night without rest they say that prayer. Pretty repetitive....just not meaningless.

4. Jesus taught us the Lord's Prayer....should we only say that once? Really? And like, how much time has to go by before it is considered to be a "repeat"? Once per hour? Once per day? Once per week? What?

5. What if an impromptu prayer from someone's heart is just "Thank you for this day, Jesus. I love you." What if that is said again later in the same day or something? Repetitive...yes. Vain....No. I betcha Jesus would be AOK with somebody telling Him that they love Him more than once per day. Even if they use the exact same words.

It could be that the heathens in Matthew 6 were praying in vain/meaningless for several reasons but one could be because they tried to use many words and thought their eloquence with words might earn them a better chance of being heard and answered. ("they think they will be heard because of their many words.")

They may have not understood, perhaps, that prayer is about what is in a person's heart more than what is in the words used.

Keep praying to God even if you repeat yourself. He is looking at your heart. He understands how concerned you are for your dog/pups. Don't worry about being repetitive. I think that can happen to us naturally when we become very concerned or stressed and He understands that.

I do hope you find them and will say a prayer for you now.

God bless.

Hey Miri.

My bad. I do apologize for my part. I know better. My fault.

Derailment from the OP.

I went back and responded to the OP and I am checking out of here.

God bless.

Like the catholic hail Marys I also think of the Jews standing at the wailing wall...

Matthew 6:7: "And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words"

Matthew 15:8-9: ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

Isaiah 59:1-2: "Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, That it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy, That it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear"

The unsaved who are bound to a religion tend to pray vain repetitions, and the scriptures say their hearts are far from Him.

The jews in that picture are just talking to the air. He does not listen to the vain prayers of unbelievers, unless the person is praying for salvation. Once the person is saved they then have access to God through Jesus.

Just to add to what I said above..... it's a matter of the heart. We're shown the contrast between the non believer and the believer when it comes to prayer, like this outward display of 'holiness' (praying at the wailing wall for all to see, as an example).... versus a believer that humbly prays in the quiet of their own room. Pride versus humility (heart).

I don't believe that making the same requests over and over in prayer would be considered vain repetition. We're told to pray without ceasing. Even though He knows the desires of our hearts... when we ask and we receive it strengthens our faith.

Also, just to add that someone you're in a relationship with - you would speak with them intimately, not read lines from a script. Religion versus relationship.

Jesus is Lord. Jesus commanded exactly which words to use to pray. You may look at the parts below of a Bible which I judge help show Jesus commanded exactly which words to use to pray. I don't judge Jesus commanded the wrong words to use to pray, He commanded perfectly which words to use to pray, there is no imperfection in what He commanded. I don't judge using every time I pray only the exact words Jesus commanded to use to pray, as praying foolishly. I don't speak arrogantly, I judge Jesus did not command this, then, is how you should pray but you should use other words to pray which you want to use.

Matthew 6:

9 "This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

Luke 11:

1 One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples."
2 He said to them, "When you pray, say: "'Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.

I don't judge that I know better than Jesus in judging exactly which words to use to pray.

Luke 6:

46 "Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?
47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like.

Part of Exodus 7:2

You are to say everything I command you

John 12:49

For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.

God has Omnipresence which allows Him to hear the Prayers of everybody.

The Catholics say Mary can hear their Prayers to her from everybody.

God has Omniscience to answer all the Prayers to Him.

The Catholics say Mary can answer all their Prayers also.

The Scriptures says Jesus was born without sin.

The Catholics say Mary was born without sin.

So yes, the Catholics have made Mary equal to God.

In fact Catholic Doctrine states we need to go through Mary first to reach Jesus. So yes, to the Catholics Mary is God.

The basic premise set forth by St. Louis Marie de Montfort is simply that Jesus came into the world through Mary and that for us to always be assured of being close to Jesus, even closer than ever before, we should go through Mary.[/h]
