So many today put lyrics over harmony; they say that as long as the lyrics are wholesome, it does not matter how one composes the sound. It is on this idea that “Christian rap” and “Christian metal” were founded.

To those who think such things, tell me, was it not the sound of David’s harp that drove the demon who possessed Saul away? David did not sing, but play, and yet it was the very harmony of his composition that exorcised the evil spirit.
Harmony, and the order of sound, does matter in music. God loves order, and hates disorder. He took the earth when it was in chaos, and brought it sequence and organization.

True music is as timeless as eternity, being composed within the finite world by mortal hands, yet first conceived in the infinite mind of God; it takes that which is “without form, and void” (Genesis 1:2), and engraves upon the human heart that very sublime concept of “In the beginning God created” (Genesis 1:1). The flesh is struck by a darkness that fills the waters of the soul and plunges our very beings to a chasm of emptiness, and it is true music that elates our minds with the words, “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3). It is true music that, when it is done before the oppressed soul, repulses the devils away, scatters and drives them to the abyss, as what happened when David played the harp for King Saul, for “the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” (John 1:5)

A member of the Christian metal band Impending Doom stated in an interview that their latest album is "darker sounding" and "creepy sounding". However, God's Word says that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" (2 Timothy 1:7). If music has a dark and creepy sound, then it is plain to see that it has the spirit of fear, which is just the opposite of what that verse describes as the Spirit that comes from God. When the Bible talks about the fear of God in verses like Proverbs 9:10, that is completely different, because it simply means to have a reverence for Him. But the fear that is produced by dark or creepy sounding music is more of an unpleasant fear (contrary to the fear of God, which is the beginning of wisdom) that could not possibly come from the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:24). So what is the Spirit of God like? Is it the brutal spirit that is in so many metal songs? Jesus indicated the opposite when He said "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am
gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:29). And Paul wrote "let your gentleness be known to all men" (Philippians 4:5). It is clear from those two verses that God intends for us to have a gentle and tender spirit. Even if they have good intentions, I do not see Christian metal bands letting their gentleness being known to all men when they have the same dark, angry and aggressive sound in just about every one of their songs, just as secular metal bands do. That may only give people the impression that there is no difference between Christians and the rest of the world.

Christian Heavy Metal (is not only obviously evil sounding to those who are willing to forsake all things to follow Jesus), but it is also obviously has a very angry spirit behind it's music, too.

Now, is all anger bad?

It seems that many within the church have gotten the idea that it is wrong for us to ever get angry about anything, but that is not what I am suggesting here. The Bible says “Be angry and do not sin: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil" (Ephesians 4:26-27).

So if our anger leads to sin, then we can be sure that it is motivated by selfish pride, and this is the kind of anger which gives place to the devil. Jesus on the other hand, was angry toward sin (See Mark 3:5 as an example), and this is a very different kind of anger.

Naturally, the kind of anger we feel is aroused because our pride has been hurt....but the kind of anger Jesus felt was aroused out of concern for the destruction which sin is bringing upon man. So this kind of anger is not giving place to the devil, but it is a genuine concern for those who are willingly destroying themselves and others. If we truly are grieved by sin as Jesus is, then our anger will not lead us into sin…if it does, than it is motivated by pride, and not out of a concern for the well being of others. This is why the Bible tells us that “Love....does not seek its own” (1 Corinthians 13:4-5).

Christian Metal is all about seeking it's own beat of mindless anger. They say it is just a style. Really, why is the style so obviously aggressive and hateful sounding?

If we are hurt by what someone has said about us, it can only be because we are seeking our own....and according to James 3:14-16, this type of “wisdom” is giving place to the devil. But the one who is truly seeking the well being of others will have no burdens about self, but many about others.

The Bible also tells us that we should not hasten in our spirit to be angry (See Ecclesiastes 7:9), so we can be sure that this kind of anger is motivated by selfish pride, and this is an example of giving place to the devil. The Lord Himself is long suffering (See 2 Peter 3:9), and although His anger is righteous, He is also slow to anger (See Nahum 1:3).

Okay, so if the Bible tells us to not hasten our spirit to be angry in Ecclesiastes 7:9, then why is Christian Metal doing that very thing? Be ye angry and sin not is only in view if you are struggling with sin. But the Christian life is not supposed to be one of defeat but of victory. For sin shall not have dominion over you. Also, if God is slow to anger according to Nahum 1:3, why is Christian Metal music always focused on a beat that sounds angry and confusing?

Is God the author of confusion?

Anyways, some who are into Christian metal may mean well, but good intentions are not all we need. We also need discernment.

"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness" (Galatians 5:22).

Have you ever wrote a song? Have you ever played and instrument ? Have you ever just sang? Music has to be orderly. Music theory calls for order. Constructing the chords into a riff takes order. The bass lines running with the riff take order. The melodies of the vocals takes order. The beats of the drums take order.
How can you say Metal is disorderly? Without order it would truly be noise

Metal is not orderly?
Just a quick lesson in music:
The theory behind the classic "metal solo" is: going from the song scale and taking a mode of that scale or changing key just prior and using a mode of that scale, then scaling the mode, changing the mode, scaling the mode, changing the mode, adding an extra note to the mode using a bend, returning to first mode with a trill, landing on the root or 4th or 5th of the original song key.

If you think metal is disorderly chaos, you don't study music. It is by far the most intricately organized genre of music ever created, the best of which is far outmatching the works of Mozart according to most Berkley professors.
Stop speaking foolishness.
The technical precision of metal is why I generally prefer other genres. It's just TOO perfect in organization.

As for "harmony", have you ever heard of "counterpoint"? It is 2 melodies played simultaneously, each being a harmony of the other at all points. The only modern genre to use counterpoint regularly is... you guessed it: metal.

Learn about music before debating about it.

This thought of "lyrics over harmony is bad".
What nonsense are you willing to spew to make a point?

Jason, make a list of songs you like. Show us what harmony is.

Metal music puts forth a sound of confusion. Many times you cannot hear what is being said. Also the loud clammering of noise can disorient someone if it is played (Whether it be short time or a long time). Real music soothes the soul and uplifts God and it is not aggressive or prideful sounding.

Metal music can also make people feel depressed.

After a boy committed suicide while listening to Metal music, it was admitted by another that Metal music has even led them to feel depression.

PC Glyn Farrell, who attended the scene of the death, said he was a fan of death metal but admitted it could be depressive.

'I do listen to that sort of music myself, which has a lot of screaming with heavy guitar sounds,' he told the hearing. 'It can have an effect on people.'

Why do I constantly see people claim that christian rappers and christian rock bands are actually satanic? A couple years ago I heard a band called Skillet (If you don't know them, they are a christian rock band) and just recently saw them live in concert at spirit song. During the concert, after every couple song, the lead singer would stop and give a quick sermon and talk about Jesus. So then a few minutes ago I see this guy trying to convince people that rap and rock is the devil's music. First thing I'd like to say is this: The devil's music seems to change every few years. How long before country music is the devil's music? How long before Dolly Parton is 'revealed' to be worshipping Satan? So this guy shows this interview, and you can barely hear what the band is saying, then he starts telling you what they said. Then he's saying Metallica, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, and Queen are all openly Satanic rock bands. Give me any shred of evidence that any of those bands are satanic. Just because they don't identify as christian bands doesn't make them satanic. So why does everybody feel the need to try and tell people that very openly christian musicians are actually satanic? Thoughts?
I'm a christian in my 30s. I sometimes donot care for the christian rock rap etc because I am old fashioned. However, I have heard preachers say this music is perfect because it appeals to young people... People who are our future and can build Christianity back up.

Here's a song for you. Do you know it?

1 And am I born to die?
To lay this body down?
And must my trembling spirit fly
Into a world unknown,

2 A land of deepest shade,
Unpierced by human thought,
The dreary regions of the dead,
Where all things are forgot?

3 Soon as from earth I go,
What will become of me?
Eternal happiness or woe
Must then my portion be:

4 Waked by the trumpet's sound,
I from my grave shall rise,
And see the Judge, with glory crowned,
And see the flaming skies!

5 How shall I leave my tomb?
With triumph or regret?
A fearful or a joyful doom,
A curse or blessing meet?

6 Will angel bands convey
Their brother to the bar?
Or devils drag my soul away,
To meet its sentence there?

7 Who can resolve the doubt
That tears my anxious breast?
Shall I be with the damned cast out,
Or numbered with the blest?

8 I must from God be driven,
Or with my Savior dwell;
Must come at his command to heaven,
Or else—depart to hell!

Is this death metal or out of a hymnbook?
Was this penned by an angry youth, or a great theologian?

People really cannot even hear the lyics half the time in heavy metal music. As I said before, the beat has been scientifically proven to cause disorientation and make someone's attitude worse. So the lyrics are kind of pointless. If someone cannot actually tell that heavy metal music of any kind is evil, they need to be open to talking to Jesus about it and be open to the Scriptures that it could be wrong. Otherwise they are just doing what is good and right in their own eyes. My guess is that most prefer their music over Jesus if they are not willing to seek the truth on this matter and be willing to give it up (If Scripture is against it).

You don't have that "scientific proof", or you would cite the source... as I asked you to yesterday.

I hear the words just fine, and the effort put in when I don't is always well worth it.

Lazy judgements!
How am I to take your opinion seriously, when ALL you give is opinion?

Make a list of songs you like. Even one song.

I don't need a scientific source to know the concept of reaping and sowing. If you put garbage in, then garbage will come out. Besides, we have the Internet. So it is not like this is a secret or anything.

Just because you do not agree with something does not mean it is evil or o the devil. In biblical times during pentacost they spoke in tongues and not everyone could understand it (like you mentioned about the rock music), and yes they had a translator.... but correct me if I am wrong, when you purchase a music cd doesnt it usually come with what we know as the LYRICS?
I used to not understand the British lingo of the KJV bible, does that mean it is evil or wrong like Christian rock music is in your opinion?
