I don't think anyone is championing the wisdom of Ryan Lochte et al.

The individual's relationship to the rule of law and notions of justice is every bit as important as the institution's relationship to these things.

If we go about hammering the swimmers without these other factors in mind, we risk ignoring equal if not greater levels of corruption on the other side of the coin.
Oh, agreed, they probably weren't thinking too bright, and I agree that Rio law-enforcement may be exploiting an opportunity to take advantage, and make a point and a buck. They still have a right to enforce their own laws if any were broken, and the athletes, knowing up front that they're Americans on foreign soil, have to be more on guard. Sad but true.

I can't believe no one has blamed this on Bush yet! Lol, ;)
Although, it's probably not too much of a stretch to blame liberals!!!

Maybe so but I still believe something should be done here. We should not let them get away with this.
The only way to hurt them is to affect their natural gas industry, timber industry, or gold mining....other than that I don't think Brazil has much diversity in its' wealth but I could be wrong....

They are part of the BRICS nations but only b/c they have vast gold mines that they use to keep their currency afloat with the likes of Russia, China etc...and other brics nations...

Are we assuming the right to tell other countries what laws they can set? These are not human rights violations.
I think we can and should determine how American citizens are treated abroad. Letting something like this slide without verification would set a bad precedent. On the same token, countries should be allowed to enforce laws against something so basic as vandalism.

This reminds me of a few Star Trek episodes.

Maybe we should tie the whole country up, and poke it with a pillow.

What, exactly, is it anyone thinks they are "getting away with?" They have their way of handling things, and we chose to enter their Olympics in their country.

You mean they should have their own official way of fabricating a crime to extort money?

From all the conflicting reports I believe that these individuals did indeed file a false police report. There is a report that they spent the night drinking and then went into a convenience, acting rude and unruly, trashing the store and urinating on the walls. In other words, the acts of these athletes were disgraceful to the US and disrespectful to the host country. There was no extortion and certainly no act of war.

Make them all dress like the Amish, THAT'll fix 'em!

(or just wear clothes in general)

(but then we'd be punishing ourselves, hmm?) ;)

(OOoo, naughty. Tsk, tsk)

They trashed the store and the security guard who held him at gunpoint only demanded $50 of them? Also since they were only seen coming out of the bathroom then there is no proof that they did anything to the bathroom. This will not hold up in a court of law but being that they were not given due process, it most likely never went to court

Only I don't believe any crime was committed. I believe this is entirely fabricated to extort money. The fact that he wasn't even officially charged with a crime then he most likely never saw a judge. They held his passport and demanded $11,000 to an alleged charity. Funny how the charity was never named or what he allegedly damaged in this restroom. I'm not an attorney but I don't believe this would hold up in court
Maybe an American court. They weren't in America.

No, I mean the swimmers should have paid the $50 for the damage they did, and gone back to the OV, ashamed of themselves, instead of trying to fabricate a story about being robbed at gunpoint..... then no one would have heard a word about them disgracing us. It would have been done and finished right there at the gas station where they were confronted with what they did.

You've been hanging around the people who see themselves as "entitled" for far too long.

You mean take responsibility for their actions? Who does that? Haven't you heard that isn't cool?

Note sarcasm.

I think it only means, "May God punish me if I leave even one of his men alive in the morning.”

And then the Olympic Committee issued an apology.... my response would have been more along the lines of...BEEEEP you and you and backwards third world country. You should be honored that we graced your BEEEEP country with our presence. We will make sure our athletes never return to your BEEEEEP country

The news is saying they have video footage that proves the swimmers filed a false police report, vandalized a gas station, and got into a fight with security. Am I reading the news right or is there something this group knows that is different?
