Psalm 4
8 In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.

Psalm 23
1 The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORDforever.

Matthew 11
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Rest for our soul does not equal do nothing....it means taking His yoke and doing His good works for His glory.

It means peace and joy only God can give.
Resting in Christ means not striving to earn God's love but having faith and accepting that God really does love you and nothing you DO can make Him love you more or less. He adopted you and you really are His kid.

Trusting in the finished work of the cross is having faith that what Jesus did was enough to wash you clean of your sins and allow you to be adopted by God through His Holy spirit.
Not sure what you want to know...

We have these scriptures for the finished work of the cross...

John 19
28Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” 29A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. 30When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Colossians 2
13And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

We can examine scripture and what Jesus meant when he said "it is finished". It begins with Genesis 3.

I can try but I don't understand what your question is....

I can't speak for others but I can tell you what it means when I hear those phrases and what the Bible shows us about them.
well i agree with what you are saying and its okay about the rest, i lke yur version of the finished work, and what it means to you, i can get on board with that kind of thinking, because you arent explaining whyu the things Jesus said to do, are somehow not for us. so thank you for the aditions and putting up with a liuttle foolishness in this thread from myself and others :) God bless you

Genesis 3
and between your offspringe and her offspring;
he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel.”

21And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

Genesis 4
Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, 5but for Cain and his offering he had no regard.

*****

The above are shadows that point to Jesus sacrifice upon the cross for the remission of sins. It's God's first prophecy of redemption. Abel is numbered among the prophets.
The skin of animals that God used to cover Adam and Eve and the sacrifice of the firstborn of the flock by Abel covered their sin and showed faith in the prophecy of a Messiah.

yea its definately not easy all the time. to me its like excercise when you start your first 2 weeks, its hard, you dont wanna always go, but then the third and forth week. your body feels better, your muscles have more strength, your endurance is clearly improving. so then after a month or so you see the benifits and then you start increasing the weights, or the distance of your run.

sort of how i see it with the gospel. say a person is greedy with money doesnt like giving to the needy. once you see Jesus teaching that, the sanme who died for you. and see Him saying dont hear my words but do them and you will be blessed.

then you reach a point when you are praying because you have seen that you have an issue giving to those who really need it. once you take that step of faith, something happens in you, it doesnt hurt like you thought it would, because you realize " hey thois person really needs that food i got them, or this single mother really needs me to pay that bill i paid. you realize that its Love that is motivating you, and then realize hey Jesus is teaching me how to really Love freely, and this money i store up.......its value is worth alot when i use it His way because th=at single mother was praying for Help, and the Lord put that in my heart through His words......it becomes easier the more practice, and then becomes something that is a joy and you find yourself excited to meet needs and talk about the Lord with the peerson. you also see more receptive people when you are showing the Love taught in the gospel and not preaching at them but not willing to offer rreal help.

God meets needs through our willingness to follow His word. money is just one example...
Romans 1:17English Standard Version (ESV)

17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith,[a] as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

Romans 16:25-27New International Version (NIV)

25 Now to him who is able to establish you in accordance with my gospel, the message I proclaim about Jesus Christ, in keeping with the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past, 26 but now revealed and made known through the prophetic writings by the command of the eternal God, so that all the Gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from[a] faith— 27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen.

Colossians 1:22-23New International Version (NIV)

22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— 23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

i see the " it is accomplished" speaking of the mosaic Law and the scripture being fulfilled as the prophecies of the Christ. is that where your thinking is also?

the removal of the mosaic Law, is important because where there is no Law, there is no sin. and Jesus was explaining that the scriptures must be fulfilled about him beforehand.

so resting in the finished work then, is really just accepting Jesus died for our sins ? but that then doesnt mean that were not to obey the gospel ......which is kind of where i stood with it beforehand. im not seeing where that gives us rest though i guess is what im asking, the rest i see in scripture i see about rest is to learn from Jesus, and follow that Knowledge.

all because He died on the cross to remove the sins of the Law

Hebrews 9 :15 "And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

so isnt His death a removal of the first covenant law? and His gospel then would be the mediation of the new and eternal?

amen bro, do you ever study the kjv? i usually study both my original 1981 niv, and an old kjv authorized that My Grandmother gave me from the 19 50s. ita an awesome Bible it has so many things we dont find in bibles today. so many study guides and things between the books im in Love with that particular bible lol i like my niv also, had it for years and years and received it the day i was baptized. i noticed an article awhile back that makes me wonder about the current nivs because it turns out what i find in a current version is quite different from my original, i dug a bit and found out it is always evolving, being retranslated, in order to keep selling bibles.

Not exactly.we would have to discuss why God gave the law in the first place.
.much of Jesus life was prophecied in the old testament and Jesus after His ressurection took the time to open scriptures and explain it to His disciples.

The Mosaic law expounded on the two laws Jesus gave "Love God and love your neighbor"

The reason for God giving the mosaic law in so much detail is because Israel rejected hearing directly from God and wanted prophets and kings instead. Thus stricter laws.

God allowed it for a time.but now calls all to believe in Jesus and His gospel.

The New Covenant requires a people with renewed hearts and minds and born again spirits following the Holy Spirit.

Absolutely, I saw a post here where someone said it begins at the cross. No it begins with the promises of God, the giving of his son and ends at the cross.

amen to alot of that,

but isnt the mosaic Law what was placed beside the ark of the ten commandments law ? and a witness against those who broke them?

deuteronomy 31:After Moses finished writing in a book the words of this law from beginning to end, 25he gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord: 26Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you. 27For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you have been rebellious against the Lord while I am still alive and with you, how much more will you rebel after I die! 28Assemble before me all the elders of your tribes and all your officials, so that I can speak these words in their hearing and call the heavens and the earth to testify against them. 29For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster will fall on you because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord and arouse his anger by what your hands have made.”

where as the covenant law was the ten commandments placed inside the ark?

exodus 31:18 "When the LORD finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.

exodus 25:16 "Then put in the ark the tablets of the covenant law, which I will give you."

so the mosaic Law written by moses was a witness against sinners which makes all of what paul says about it being removed to me anyways really clear

colossians 2:14 "Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

to me it makes sense with other things paul says regarding being dead to the law through the body of Christ, and also makes sense with this

1 timothy 1:9 "Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,

so it makes sense to me that the thing removed was the first testament given through Moses because it was a witness against the people who God knew were going to rebel at moses death, as he tells moses just before His death. and when that mosaic Law is taken away you have only the covenant law of the ten commandments remaining. and then the new testament of Jesus, replaces moses? because we Know that Jesus came " to call sinners to repentance" and is our "advocate with the father" and is at Goids right hand, which is where the book of the Law was placed beside the ark before because Gods glory at that time dwelt just above the ark.

i see Goid removing the witness against us, and placing the advocate for us. does that seem plausible?

I use it in my studies when the translation fits the ancient greek language better.

After awhile using multiple translations i found the NIV to be my favorite. But always in my studies look at different translations.

I try to keep it modern as much as possible for all the newbs in Christ and or non believers to understand more easily.

Its like starting with ABCs before one learns to read.

It's my bedtime. Will get back when I can.

I just know there is two tunes when you read scripture....grace and mercy promised by the Messiah (new covenant)

And the Law that leads us to Christ because the Accusser will always find fault in us.

Do not eat of the tree is the first law given to mankind.

It's a war...Satan wants to show that God is unjust or unloving and to justify his rebellion and win people to his side.

God has a master plan and reveals it via the Bible.

What the enemy doesn't know is the war was won upon the cross.

what about the resurrection? and then pentacost? and then walking in the spirit? i kind of see our new lives beginning when we accept the cross, and bear our own because of faith. I find what Jesus did on the cross to be essential, but all the rest He said and taught to be the same

I have a serious question and would appreciate your input

is christianity simply about what Jesus did in dying on the cross?

or is it about Jesus the Christ, the Only begotten Son of God ?

if saying i believe then means you can never possibly sin again.....does that mean a liar or a cheater isnt reallysinning because we have a scapegoat now for the things we do that we Know are in opposition to what is right? and the " cross just excuses that? im having some major problems understanding the whole finished work of the cross doctrine, i cant seem to really find the things people say about it in scripture.

if someone actually can explain that to me, and show the scriptures that change everything in the gospel that Jesus explained clearly, i would like to see that so that i can understand. as you may percieve this to be disingenious, it isnt, i just am having trouble finding it in scripture and How it reconciles to the rest of scripture. things like " where are we told anything different than Jesus explaining the things of God? and How does His death promised long ago, change the rest. Im sincerely not sure im getting it, because i have a very different understanding of the crucifixion than it seems most do.

so bros n sissys if you have a good grasp on this " finished work of the cross doctrine" and have scriptural support, please leave some words that may help me understand what im missing.

God Bless you in the things of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ !
Ok,God is a God of purpose.

What was the purpose of the cross?

Was it the "finished work"...no it was not. He still had to go to hades, paradise, preach there, resurrect, ascend to heaven and present his blood to the father.

IOW,the death became a vehicle for the resurrection.

I went into detail about the "it is finished" statement from Jesus in another thread. It was soundly rejected by most all here.

It has to do with the priesthood.

I won't waste my time with unteachables, but nobody here has hit the target.

yesh i find that all of scripture is pointing to Jesus the messiah, i just also see much more than His death on the cross, i see all the prophets spoke of His word being the Life and truth and judgements of God and fire that refines, and water that causes streams of living water to well up in the soul, and a rod that strikes the earth and so much more that is told by the prophets, i find the cross to be a pattern of the atonement sacrifices, and Jesus to be so much greater than just what He did on the cross is my position.

like the good shepherd, his sheep follow, which refers me back to " the Lord is my sheopherd. i truly believe everything in scriopture points to the messiah, not just his death and resurrection but all He did and said in the gospel.

honestly no offense, but the attitude that people are unteachable, and the insistance that what you know is the only understanding kind of probably leads to rejection of the things you say maybe consider this if you consider yourself a teacher

2 timothy 2:24-26 "And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will."

i dont mean offens but to approach people with that mindset doesnt seem wise.

can i ask if your interpretation includes obedience to the gospel?
