Acts 17:16-34

In Athens

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was greatly distressed to see that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagoguewith both Jews and God-fearing Greeks, as well as in the marketplace day by day with those who happened to be there. 18 A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection. 19 Then they took him and brought him to a meeting of the Areopagus, where they said to him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting? 20 You are bringing some strange ideas to our ears, and we would like to know what they mean.” 21 (All the Athenians and the foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing but talking about and listening to the latest ideas.)
22 Paul then stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said: “People of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. 23 For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god. So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you.
24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands.25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.26 From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. 27 God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. 28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’
29 “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. 30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”
32 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.”33 At that, Paul left the Council. 34 Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. Among them was Dionysius, a member of the Areopagus, also a woman named Damaris, and a number of others.

If we follow Paul's example here ... he did not acquaint himself with all their pagan rituals ... he focused on the Gospel in the midst of them. He didn't read up on them and become an expert in pagan worship so he could refute their religion ... he simply advanced his own religion: "the Gospel".

Yet Paul was familiar with the pagan poetry, at least, for he said:

As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’

So do you think by that reasoning we should all take up reading Gnosticism so we can refute it?

True enough, haha. :D I don't think the apostle Paul was an unlearned man in certain respects. I liked Psalmists comment because to me it emphasizes the Gospel in power over enticing words (which Paul spoke of).

Then again, we don't know if the Holy Spirit enlightened him to that truth, more so than him reading their poetry. lol

After spending a year with the "witnesses" ... God prompted me to go in the basement and throw out all the literature of theirs I had from them. He told me to get rid of all that leaven ...

It looks like Paul was familiar with more than one of their poets. I wonder which ones? We are not told. It is probably not important. The fact is that he was familiar with what pagan poets wrote. I don't think it can be taken to mean that you or anyone else should necessarily study them to see what they say, after having come to the Truth. Do you think it does?

You are so enamored on what cults teach you are blinded from the truth. Any resemblance to cults, even if it is truth, you immediately shun it. Stop studying cults and start studying God's word. Its putting cracks in your foundation.
I've studied the bible longer than you've been alive.

I was a professionally practicing pagan, and burned all my books also. It took four of us three hours to rip them up a bit before tossing them into the flames. A good time was had by all :D Unbelievably, some of my friends who were Christian told me to keep my books and everything in case I changed my mind  It was one thing when my non-believing friends said such things to me, but Christians? Sure makes ya wonder ;)

I think once we are reborn and in Christ that it is important to follow His leading ...

I think also we tend to glean things that are not Christian just by living in this world and we are not called to hide under a bed ...

But I strongly doubt that the Lord would lead us into the full time study of all things that oppose Christianty ...

We are commanded rather, to keep our minds on things above ...

The Holy Spirit can make a babe in Christ more wise than someone who has read the Bible 100 years without Him.

Paul told Timothy not to let anyone scoff at him because of his age or amount of time he has been in Christ.

There's also this. This was written by some Cretian writer.

A certain one of them, [one of] their own prophets, has said, “Cretans [are] always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” Titus 1:12

Haha slow bellies. NIV says lazy gluttons.

Please accept my apology for the way I spoke to you the other day. It was unwarranted,
and I am sorry. I have been meaning to say something about it to you for a few days now.

I'm sure that's true, but I was responding to Ben's taunt that I should study the bible more. It's really quite funny coming from someone who knows so little about it.

Gnosticism started as Christian heresy. You read it every here.
I'm just saying that to me, it seems unhealthy to spend too much time researching all those things that oppose Christians rather than spending that time on things that advances Christianity.

Yes, we burned my books because we did not want anyone else to get their hands on them. Not like they are out of print or anything, just not wanting to make it easy for anyone to come by what I was discarding :) It was a huge bonfire out of city limits when they allow such things on agricultural lands. I also got to testify to the people there that I did not know that well, for the property belonged to relatives of a friend of mine, someone who had testified to me for years, and gave me a Bible at least seven years before I came to belief :D
