Oh, good gravy! How many of you are there on CC? I don't see in the Internet and computers/phones/laptops being authorized in the Bible and you're making use of any number of them. How could you? Bazinga!
do not try make sense of the crazy....crazy is non-understandable....insanity is doing (or in this case, saying) the same thing over and over again and expecting different results :p

I think you missed the bit about the worship being Spirit filled. Or maybe you just care about the stuff that doesn't matter.

I agree with you, brother. People are putting everything under a microscope, leaving out the big picture. The big picture is that we love, worship and praise God. We can do it however we want. Have you seen how some of the indigenous tribes in Africa worship Christ? Have you seen how some of the ex-temple priests in India worship Christ? No matter how they worship and in which language they worship, they are still worshipping Christ. This is what matters!

Furthermore, it is ironical how some people selectively criticize today's practices, while ignoring the rest. Here are some of the often-ignored practices -

1) Jesus rode on a colt. Don't we all ride bicycles, motorcycles, cars, trains, ships and aeroplanes? Are we in breach of the Word of God for travelling on the latest modes of transport?

2) Jesus did not speak in English. The original scripts were not in English. But today we have so many versions of the Bible in English (KJV being only ONE of them). Furthermore, we have translated the Bible into hundreds of languages so that everybody can own a Bible. Does owning an English Bible make mine any less powerful than the original manuscripts? Or, does praying in English make my prayer any less powerful than praying in Aramaic?

The ones who keep nit-picking and criticizing everything and everyone are no different from the Pharisees and lawyers in Jesus' days. They are more interested in adding to people's burden and making their lives more miserable with rules upon rules, while they do nothing to alleviate their burden.

In my opinion, Christ was/is/will be the best salesman ever. His selling message is simple "No matter who you are, I have a solution for you." He does not expect everyone to be a conformist. He wants us to follow Him of our own accord while retaining our identity. That is the difference between the rest of creation and us. If Jesus Himself simplified the law into two points, who are you and I to add more to it?

Scripture says if we have the Spirit of God dwelling in us , then ,we are a law unto ourselves. It being written in our hearts. There for by the Spirit of God dwelling in me, I declare it OK, to worship with all your heart soul and physical stength,to the Maker of heaven and earth, the creator of all things both stringed and unstung! Do you tap your feet when you get excited in singing to the lord?? Just wondering....that would be awful close to playing a drum and might need further inquiry by the inquisition.
It really is hard for people who are under a list of self-imposed legalistic regulations instead under the loyalty to God in their actions.
They would have stoned Rahab for lying to hide God's messengers, stoned David from eating shewbread from the temple that was unlawful to him to eat but he was hungry, stoned Jesus for saying I am, etc. Because they "broke the rules"... absolutely disregarding the absence of evil and loyalty to God in their actions. And they have broken even written and specifically commanded rules, while upon us a rule that the Bible doesnt even proclaim is being forced...
Doesnt it say to pray and petition to God for all things... but show me a father which wont take their sick child to doctor also?
Unfortunately there are some fathers like this, and also those who did not allow transfusion of blood to their children because "life is in blood" and are responsible for their death...

My church forbids medication. It also forbids blood donation and transfusion.

But I digress...

Yes, yes, but we don't use computers or phones AT CHURCH. And we never sit down - chairs are not mentioned in church in the new testament. In fact the only time anyone is mentioned sitting down in church was when the boy sat in the window and fell asleep when Paul was preaching. And you know what happened to him... So yeah, no chairs in church. Or pulpits for that matter. No carpet either.

And choirs are straight out. The Bible mentions singing in the NT but nothing about organized choirs. If your church has a choir you'd better find another church, one that doesn't practice such heresy.

And don't get me started on those tennis shoes. Sandals they are NOT! When you come to church take your shoes off at the door. Socks too, the Bible never said anything about socks.

Hey, the Tourists just did that in October we ended up in a Hindu Temple on a Saturday had to take our shoes off at the door. Didn't see any musical instruments in there either, of course there was only one person in there besides us......There were a lot of idols though that were referred to as deity. We did worship God there and shared Christian litchure with the only man there we assumed he was Hindu..... interesting little mistake in searching for an SDA church.... We were on a mission from God and it was fun.

An argument out of silence with re-direction is no answer at all, it is confirmation that you cannot form an opinion becaue of either convcition or you are unable to refute facts. In other words, you cannot defend your faith or your doctrine and then call it an attack.
Actually, your continuous disrespect for others who do not agree with you is why I am "silent". Why would someone debate with a belligerent attitude?

All I stated was you need to make sure you're correct about churches before you comment on them. That is a simple bit of advice for you and anyone and you went into attack mode saying things that are not related to this thread as an excuse to bash me. Do as you wish. I have yet to lose sleep on it. It's on your conscious. Not mine.

I will be kind enough to give you a bit of info on the Church of Christ though. We speak where the bible speaks and silent where the bible is silent. My beliefs are conservative and Ive never said or feel that I'm right on everything. I study daily and learn more every day. as far as instrumental music is concerned that is a grey area. Instruments may not be "wrong" in worship but there is no direct command to have them. Therefore, I prefer to use my voice as my instrument than a mechanical one. Even in saying this I do not condemn anyone who uses them. I would also prefer that others not condemn me or others like me who choose acapella music.
The constant jokes and jabs about others who believe differently is quite discouraging to people like me who is in a constant battle with their spirituality and needs encouragement more than anything. I stopped frequenting this site when I became a bully like many in this thread are doing. Now, when I'm suffering I come here and am treated as a heathen over a difference about music. It's upsetting. I won't argue or defend my beliefs to other people. It is about my personal relationship with God that I need to concern myself over. Not a CC debate over issues that do nothing than cause more division between brothers and sisters in Christ. Have a good day

I just talked to a friend who grew up in a Michigan CoC congregation. He said that he had never heard about any of these rules about no instruments in church. He remembers some things about them not liking tv (totally understandable) and not celebrating Christmas in the traditional sense (also understandable).
After the conversation, I have to assume that this ban of instruments is only in certain spinoff CoC congregations, and not a definition of the "denomination" as a whole. Actually, I really liked a lot of the CoC teaching, such as the deacon/elder government model, and the "small church, family style relationship" mindset.

My question would be , why are so many contemporary churches restricted to guitars and drums only?

Psalms 150:1-6
1 Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.
2 Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
3 Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
5 Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
6 Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.

I think you are taking the debate the wrong way. None of this is in any condemnation of acapella singing.
What is being debated is whether or not we are "authorized" to use instruments in worship.
The only accusation being placed is AGAINST those who use instruments, not against those who don't.

When a person accuses another of acting without the authority and authorization of Christ, they are making a serious accusation. The two sides of this debate are from the prosecution: stating that using mechanical instruments are outside of our authorithy in NT worship, and the defendants: stating that we do have authority to use mechanical instruments in NT worship.

Some of the prosecution add that instrumental music is "pleasing to the flesh" and worldly, and using them in worship is "pagan" and committing spiritual adultery.
Some in the defense add that we are called to use instruments to worship God.
Both of those arguments can be potentially offensive to the opposing side, but we are not called to be easily offended.

Yea, the insults are not needed or helpful. I'll be praying for your encouragement. Maybe we can speak together about a less controversial topic, and build each other up instead. I'm sorry if I was a cause of any discouragement to you.
