If all a woman has to offer is her looks then she isn't wife material. A good man will look beyond the physical beauty of a woman. And if a woman thinks she isn't attractive enough to have a man then she needs to work on her self confidence before entering a relationship in the first place. I was insecure for many many years. When I let my insecurity go is when I found love. Cheesey? Yes but true.
TL;DR: Is ugliness due to the Fall? Also, this is just food for thought, don't get offended.

This may seem... offensive to some, but hear me out. Do you think that ugliness is due to the Fall? Everything God made was good. When you look through nature, some would say you see beauty all around us. So my point in regards to humanity, is that God must have made Adam and Eve beautiful and only after the Fall did old age and deterioration come into play. Which then led to gene mutation and so on. So, would it not be far fetched to consider that ugliness rather than being how God made a person, is rather due to the Fall and curse?

This being the case, this discussion could take an interesting turn into getting surgery to make yourself feel confident. If your looks are indeed due to the Fall and are less than... attractive, then its okay to "change yourself." People say, "Oh but God made you that way. You are changing how God made you." However, considering the Fall and how that has affected our DNA, is it really how God made you? Or is the process due to genetics and indeed, the genetics are flawed from what once was perfection? If someone wants to alter their appearance, whether it be simple work or what have you, is it perfectly fine to do, if it expands one's comfort zones? What reason(s) would be suitable, or is it your own body and do what you please?

Why would God make something ugly? For what reason? Is it to make that which is beautiful look all the better? Comparably, people say darkness exists and therefore light shines brighter. But God did not create evil, because He is love. In the same way, how could anyone think God made them ugly? No... it goes back to the Fall.

We can never fathom God's thoughts on how or why he created both physical beauty and ugliness. We can only speculate. Maybe to test the human character if he will look down on the other. We are all created equal, but humanity built standards for their own selfish purposes.
Our minds are wired to prefer physical beauty over ugliness. There is this experiment on two babies who are presented two women for a period of time. One is pretty and the other is ugly. The two babies looked longer on the pretty woman. Even babies who dont know about prejudice and society's standard on beauty prefer the pretty woman. But i know the heart is wired differently though.

Is it written in the scriptures that plastic surgery and the like is a sin?

Completely, we are responsible for our own appearance. In my personal opinion, I think that we as Ambassadors for God should be presentable. We go before kings, queens, and presidents and make ourselves looking respectable, why then should we do things for the Kingdom and not do so(make ourselves look respectable/appealing) for the King of Kings? Personal responsibility does play a role, as you said and there are people that use the excuse of vanity to avoid upkeep, unfortunately. What are your thoughts on vanity? Is vanity to be prideful of your appearance? I could hardly see the desire to look your best to be vanity, when doing such could firstly, bring glory to God (I am God's creation) and secondly, and repeated, you are God's representative. Also, you are the temple of the Holy Spirit, why shouldn't you take care of yourself?

PS: Maybe bringing God glory is a tad of a stretch. lol Though, people do get amazed when they study human anatomy and therefore, that does bring glory to God of His power.
Vanity is something at some point every one will experience.
I still do, and struggle with it. I love to get cosmetic injections which enhance my lips and also stop me from getting wrinkles and frowning.
Partly because I get headaches also.

I know I don't NEED these things and can be quite vain but it's something that pleases me and I don't think I will ever give it up. It makes me feel good.

BUT when people go OVERBOARD that's when it becomes obsessive and again (ugly)
I think keeping it simple is nice as no one can tell that I have had work done :)

I love the body - I learnt anatomy and physiology, muscular and skeletal, skin biology, etc

We are made very well indeed :)

I'm actually trying to remember the last time I lifted up a guys shirt to check for a 6 pack before deciding to date him. Oh wait, i haven't.

This just shows you the reflection of our modern current society's clothing styles. Men usually wear loose, comfortable clothing and women usually have almost NO idea what's underneath...abs, pecs, calves, or any other body part. While with women's clothing on the other hand.... all the goods are laid out for you to see in great detail. All you need is one glance and you pretty much know exactly her body type. No guesswork, no imagination required for men at all. Elizabeth proves exactly my point - you would actually have to lift a guys loose fitting shirt, so to speak to know what his chest/abs look like. But with women's clothing you pretty much know already the instant you see her. THIS I think is not very fair. If all men (no matter their body type) wore really tight shirts and lycra pants all the time, I bet they would feel as inscure as we do!!

If all men wore lycra pants they wouldn't be able to have children and the human race would become extinct. Therefore, lycra pants = the apocalypse.

Some men do wear tight fitting clothes. You would look at them and go -

I would never wear tight-fitting clothes but I am just saying. These days most shirts and pants come with 'regular', 'slim' and 'ultra slim' fittings. If a guy is wearing the right fit for his body type, it will give you an idea about his shape. For me, it is the 'slim fit' that suits best.

The song made me cry. And when she asks, "Do you like you?", I have to answer with "No, I don't."
What's not to like about you? I'm sure you have God given gifts. Your weaknesses can be turned into strengths. So there's no reason to dislike. God only gave us one self and one life, we have no choice but to be the best that we can be to please Him. :)

I think there is a thin line between getting "work" done or not... I mean... You have to be careful where you place your confidence. I understand those who have been thru illness or cancer or a traumatic event like a fire and need procedures to help restore their physical looks. On the other hand, more and more now, it is becoming a norm for normal young girls to have things done simply because they lack confidence in themselves and believe in what society tells them.

I'd rather have a loving heart and brains than beauty. :)

And the majority of our society's idea of beauty is actually done thru photoshop... It doesn't even exist in reality...
You have all three.

I miss the days when a man saw a woman he liked clubbed her over the head and took her home.
Back in the day this would get you a wife, now it'll get you five to seven. :p:p

Your usual thoughtful response. Those that lack confidence often make poor choices and this perpetuates the cycle of
low self-esteem.

Can't stand this topic. Seriously.

Stop comparing yourself to others and chill out!!!

Comparing yourself to others will only make your life miserable. I will not even start with all the hate and jealousy towards so called ''beautiful'' people... You have to start with yourself. You have to accept yourself & love yourself. I absolutely enjoy people who are comfortable in their own skin.

I have to agree with what "error" said here. Once we all stop comparing ourselves to others, and realize that not everyone finds "the ideal" to be their ideal, it really changes things for the better. Yes, men can be very visual. So can women. That doesn't mean that we all enjoy the same visuals and once someone is comfortable in their own skin I feel that instantly makes them a lot more attractive.

If everybody stops comparing themselves to others, what would the cosmetic companies do? Won't they go out of business? :p
